PEP Advisory Council Minutes 12-10-2013

PEP Advisory Council Minutes

December 10, 2013

The meeting was called to order at 3:35 by Larry Weigel

Members Present: Cheryl Pickens, Katie Straub, Andy Hollifield, Cynthia Broaddrick, Janet Smith, Mike Mims, and Larry Weigel.

Items on the agenda were discussed.  As we were discussing program budget constraints and the effects on staffing, especially the absence this year of any teacher planning time (due to the loss of the two planning sub positions), Ms. Straub shared several items of interest about how News2You and Unique Learning have helped reduce teacher planning requirements by making available ready-to-use curriculum, which all PEP teachers are using daily.  Also discussed was the positive effect the PLCs (Professional Learning Communities) are having with teachers and how the four PLC groups of teachers are working together more supportively than ever.

During the discussion of the Best Buy grant and the plan to have an iPad in every PEP classroom after the first of the year, Ms. Pickens (PTO President) shared that the Jewelry Sales fundraising has resulted in one additional iPad, and she wondered where would be the best place to use it.  Ms. Weigel suggested it be given to the Speech Language Pathologists as a spare to use in case one of the classroom iPads is out of the classroom for repair.

The Safe Schools discussion included concern about how accessible all school buildings are, especially at the beginning and end of the day when doors are unlocked for students to enter and exit.

Accolades were offered to Ms. Pickens and the PTO for their fundraising activities.  Some ideas for additional fundraising were brainstormed.  One issue seems to be about communication regarding fundraising events – information not getting home with students, missed opportunities for information to get out to outside individuals or agencies who would be willing and able to assist fund raising efforts, etc.

Mr. Hollifield shared that he has a friend in Burnsville, Jeff Burns (284-0265), who might be able to assist PEP in acquiring medical supplies for our “Grab and Go” backpacks.  He will call Mr. Burns and Mr. Weigel will follow up with specific needs.

It was noted that the next PEP Advisory Council would meet Tuesday, February 11, 2014 @ 3:30 and the Roberson District Advisory Council will meet at valley Springs on April 21, 2014 at 10:00.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:50.
