Cane Creek Middle School marked a milestone May 17 with a special gathering to honor the school’s past, present, and future.
The school and its Parent Teacher Association hosted the Cane Creek 25th Anniversary Celebration, a joyous block party that featured lawn games, tasty treats, and a special performance by the school’s Hurricane Jazz Band. Guests included past and present teachers and principals, former students, and elementary kids who will one day attend the school.
"You can tell how much this school means to people by all the smiles on the faces here today,” said principal Andrea Britt. “Our school builds a sense of belonging among our students, staff, and families, and I love seeing that continue after our students leave us. It’s great reconnecting and seeing how our students have built on the academic, artistic, and athletic experiences they had here at Cane Creek.”
Guests at the silver anniversary celebration also got to see the “Cane Creek Strong” quilt, created by bus driver Susan Shelley. She created each square from drawings made by students when they returned to school after Hurricane Helene.
“This year was a reminder of how important our school community is,” Ms. Britt added. “Our PTA, staff, and families helped connect those in need with vital resources. And we were here for each other to listen to experiences, wrap our arms around each other, and help heal as a community.”
Teacher and wrestling coach Todd Robertson was presented a special award for dedicated service. He has taught and coached at the school from the day it opened its doors in 2000.
"This is a beautiful place to come to work every day, and see the sun come up over the mountains,” Mr. Robertson said. “The school has always had outstanding leadership and I’ve learned so much from all the amazing teachers I’ve worked with over the years. Cane Creek is a special place.”
